Loneliness can be one of the most challenging aspects of international living; one is far from home, far from family and friends, and the culture is so different–and so many familiar landmarks are missing. But in a way, it is this kind of difficulty that gives one strength, courage, resilience, and adaptability.
Have you seen this poem by Tanya Davis (video by Andrea Dorfman), about “How to be Alone”? It’s not about international travel, but it doesn’t matter. It speaks to being ok, alone.
Want to delve deeper into alone-ness? Consider a short Yoga and Meditation retreat (for students) or our Mindfulness Retreat program (for adults)
Postscript: We have posted several articles about Loneliness and Cultural Adjustment on our Internship Resources page
